How to Prepare for a Branding Session

June 8, 2026

A branding session only pays off if the photos actually get used — and that comes down to planning before the camera ever comes out, not just what happens during the shoot.

Build a shot list first

Before the session, list out exactly where these photos need to live: website hero, About page, LinkedIn, pitch deck, social posts. Each of those has a different aspect ratio and mood. Knowing this upfront means the session covers what you'll actually need instead of guessing after the fact.

Wear what you actually wear

Branding photos should look like you on a normal (good) day, not a costume version of you. Bring 2-3 outfit options in solid colors or simple patterns — busy prints and logos tend to distract from the shot.

Plan your locations

A mix of environments reads better than one static backdrop: your workspace, somewhere that reflects what you do, and one clean, simple setting for versatile headshot-style crops.

Bring props that mean something

If your work involves physical tools, product, or a specific setting, bring it. Real context photographs better than staged generic office scenes.

Block enough time

Rushing a branding session shows up in the final photos — stiff posing, tired expressions. Build in breathing room between outfit or location changes so the energy stays natural throughout.

The goal is a photo library that actually gets used for a year or more, not just a one-time headshot you swap out in six months.
